The third annual Environmental Stewardship Awards Gala took place outside on a beautiful spring evening at the South Carolina Charleston Aquarium on Saturday, April 25th 2009. With over 350 people in attendance, it was a memorable evening to honor selected leaders both locally and nationally who have foraged new paths for our environmental conservation and educational efforts as well as recognize the newest Aquarium exhibit, Penguin Planet, which explores the affects of the climate change on our planet.
The evening started with passed appetizers outside the entrance of the aquarium and mojitos while guests mingled before being led to the festive outdoor tent for the awards ceremony, plated dinner and dancing.
The first course was an artisanal charcuterie plate complete with fennel salami, Humboldt fog cheese, and fig preserves (see the menu below for a complete description). With exquisite service and beautifully presented food from Iverson catering, the night proceeded flawlessly as awards and speeches were given throughout the evening.
The awards included a legacy award, presented to Alexandra Cousteau and Philippe Cousteau Jr, the children of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, for their continuing effort in conservation with the environment. Their non-profit company, EarthEcho, which sponsors and fosters leaders to make efforts in protecting and restoring our oceans, was recognized. The Leadership Award this year was presented by Mayor Riley to MeadWestvaco (MWV), a leading global packaging manufacturer with a long history of commitment to the environment both nationally and regionally in South Carolina. The Achievement award this year went to Charles Lane, a native of the Low Country, for his protection of over 181,000 acres of land in the Southeast through his ACE Basin project.
